SCRIPTURE: Judges 13, 14, 15, 16:
Text: Ephesians 3:20
OPENING: Everyone of use have some “Entitlement Mentality” in us!! We are programmed by our sinful nature that we were born with and by the society we live in. I read a sign this week that said, “I don’t have a problem with entitlement, the problem is that I am not getting everything I want.”
Have you ever heard this statement, “This God Thing just didn’t work”? God was a means to get what they feel that they are entitled to! When this didn’t happen it was a simple decision to move on to the next thing.
God owes us NOTHING! Provision has been made at the CROSS!
THE DARK SIDE OF ENTITLEMENT:
It creates an attitude that puts a selfish demand on God’s generosity and creates conditions in the relationship that are unhealthy and can be deadly. It renders us powerless!
If we believe that God owes us something then the measure of our thankfulness is now based on God’s performance and the entitlement that we expect from Him. An example of this was the prodigal son and elder brother. Both of them had entitlement mentality. One was based on FLESH, the other was based on WORKS.
1) SAMSON: CALLED, CHOSEN AND SEALED (Chapter 13:6-7): “for the child shall be a Nazarene to God from the womb to the day of his death.”
You are CALLED- CHOSEN-SEALED (Ephesian 1:3-14). “…sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession to the praise of His glory”! (v. 14)
2) SAMSON: ENTITLED (Chapter 14:1):
Entitlement mentality always leads to entrapment! The longer we play with that thinking the more entrapped we become!
Are you playing with the entitlement mentality? We all do to some degree. Samson’s entitlement was progressive just like ours!
Chapter 14 says “Get her for me. When you break the Word there are always CONSEQUENCES. Sin brings problems and you can’t play with fire and not smell like some and eventually get burned!
Samson went from the wrong wife to a harlot and from a harlot to the wrong woman! He went from ENTITLEMENT TO ENTRAPMENT!
But the good news is: in spite of his entitlement God had empowered him to accomplish a mission! What was that mission? Chapter 13:5 says “He shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hands of the Philistines.”
3) EMPOWERMENT BY SURRENDER: “O Lord God, remember me, I pray, strengthen me I pray just this once more God”.
Ephesian 3:20: ARE YOU ALLOWING THE EMPOWERMENT TO WORK?
CLOSING (Hebrews 12:1-3): Let us lay aside every weight (what is weighing you down? What sin are you playing with that you feel you are entitled too? IT WILL ENSNARE AND ENTRAP YOU.
Romans 6:1 says “SHALL WE CONTINUE IN SIN THAT GRACE MAY ABOUND” (GOD FORBID!).
HOLY SPIRIT, SHOW US OUR ENTITLEMENT ATTITUDE TODAY!
